Letter: Thanks from Salem softball coaches

To the editor:

Our Salem Witches girls fall softball team plays weekly games on Saturday mornings at Mack Park and has weekly Wednesday evening practices on the field, as well. Tim Short, the department’s supervisor, has made the effort to ensure that the field has been maintained and lined for our games. You might think that this should be a given, considering that this is part of the city Recreation Department’s job responsibilities.

However, after traveling to the fields of opposing teams, we have learned that we are very fortunate. Most softball fields in other towns are in appalling condition, with overgrown grass, unlined infields and holes that are tripping hazards for our players. The coaches from these other cities have indicated that their recreation departments provide no maintenance. So to Short and the maintenance crew who work for the Salem Recreation Department, the coaches, players and families extend a huge thank you; we are extremely grateful for your efforts!
