We join Tom Thibodeau's many friends on the North Shore in wishing the former Salem State College player and coach the best in his new job as head coach of the Chicago Bulls.
Thibodeau, 52, was the subject of a two-part profile by veteran Salem News basketball writer Mike Grenier this week in which he reflected on his NBA career and start with the Vikings.
"I could have been perfectly content at Salem State," Thibodeau reflected on his tenure here a quarter-century ago. "It was a wonderful situation."
But it's hard to say no when the pros come calling, and Thibodeau has been in the NBA ranks since 1989, first with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and most recently with the Celtics.
He was on the bench when Boston last won the NBA title in 2008, as well as last spring when the team came very close to beating the Lakers for the title once again.
We're sure most fans around here will be cheering Thibodeau's team on this coming season whenever they play the Lakers or LeBron James' Miami Heat team. And if his team can beat the Heat in the Eastern Conference playoffs, Thibodeau could become a genuine hero in these parts.
In fact, we wish him every success next year except when the Bulls take on Doc Rivers and the Celtics.
