Column: Saying 'thank you' to veterans

By contrast, I graduated from Melrose High with but one destination in mind — Salem State. Instead of torpedoes, depth charges, U-boats, and D-Day, I had a ’63 Chevy Bel Air, books, learned professors, and winter break. I made the most of my opportunity. I earned a degree in English that led to a career in journalism. That kind of opportunity would not have come knocking had our soldiers not fought for it. What makes this issue of Salem Statement special to me are the stories of today’s veterans who are not missing out on the opportunity to further their educations. The programs Salem State has in place provide them the same opportunity they fought to give us. This is to say thank you to veterans. They deserve nothing less. They’ve earned more.

Former Salem News journalist James Kevin Glynn of Beverly is a 1977 graduate of Salem State University and is the editor of the Salem Statement alumni magazine.
