Letter: Politicians should serve a year without pay

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

There is a simple way of solving America’s debt problem. Make every congressman and legislator serve one year without pay. After all, it shouldn’t be a hardship, as most of them have outside jobs or inherited wealth. Any candidate for office should not have to pay for the privilege. This would get rid of the PACs and the tiresome ads on TV. It would separate the politicians from the statesmen and return our government to the ideals on which it was founded: “Government for, by and of the people.” Presidents Day would showcase Washington and Lincoln as our revered presidents, rather than caricatures to sell cars. We true Americans are concerned about its future. Get rid of those who would destroy it.
