Letter: New generation needs representation

To the editor:

I have had the great pleasure of working with many people within Salem in several capacities. From creative initiatives to canned food drives, rock-horror experiences and political rallies fighting for a difference, I truly believe that Salem is a burgeoning city that needs leadership that better represents our youthful entrepreneurial spirit.

Having said that, I hope the Salem City Council uses its wisdom to select an interim councilor who understands realizing the goals of young, small-business owners needs willing partners in City Hall who understand our quest. Though I have a strong bias in requesting that Christopher Sicuranza should be the first choice for the council (he and I are both founders of the LGBT events group Go Out Loud), I am proud to see such a diverse pool of candidates emerge to fill the rather large shoes left behind by Joan Lovely.

Many are disappointed that the first runner-up from the last election cycle, Darek Barcikowski, didn’t pursue the interim position. However, having worked with both Darek and Chris in an intensively focused space, I feel beyond certain that Chris will be able to provide strong leadership and insights on small-business development and foster a better community experience for all of Salem.

I’m confident that 2013 will be a successful year but am determined to help find solutions first, and the conversation should start with implementing a leader like Christopher to help us realize a brighter future.
