Letter: Take the plunge this weekend

To the editor:

This Sunday, the seventh annual North Shore Polar Plunge will take place at Lynch Park in Beverly and at Waikiki Beach in Salem. As is the tradition on Super Bowl Sunday, hundreds of brave folks will plunge into the icy Atlantic to raise money for our neighbors in need. We hope you’ll join us!

Proceeds from the Polar Plunge benefit two local nonprofits: River House, which helps homeless men return to lives of self-sufficiency, and North Shore Community Development Coalition, which provides quality affordable housing and fosters economic empowerment and community development.

Check-in at Beverly’s Lynch Park and at Salem’s Waikiki Beach on Winter Island begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, with the plunge itself scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

There will be a community celebration immediately following the event at the Beverly High School cafeteria, 100 Sohier Road, Beverly. Everyone is invited! The party will feature friends, fun, music (thanks to the Beverly High School Jazz Band), great story-swapping and awards, too! Every plunger will receive a Polar Plunge T-shirt, and those brave enough to dip twice will receive a Double-Dip coupon from Captain Dusty’s Ice Cream. Trophies will be awarded to the school that turns in the most money on Plunge Day and the school with the biggest Plunge team.

If you have been thinking about plunging or would like to sponsor a brave soul who is, there is still time to register. Please visit www.polarplungenorthshore by Saturday to register or to make a donation online.

If you’re taking the plunge, remember to bring a friend to have your towel and dry clothes ready when you emerge from the ocean, and don’t forget to wear sneakers to protect your feet.

Thanks in advance to all our plungers, donors and spectators for being part of this special day and for all you are doing to make our communities great places to live. Special thanks to all our corporate sponsors, especially Beverly Cooperative Bank and Clarke Brothers Fuel.

See you at the beach!
