Letter: The problem with plastic bags

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

I was very pleased with your Jan. 3 article “The Problem With Plastic Bags.” Single-use plastic bags have represented a serious environmental problem in our society and we need to take action before it is too late. The issue of excess waste is one that needs to be taken very seriously and the fact that The Salem News has increased public awareness with this article is really great.

I have recently taken an interest in environmental issues and I have found that the damage we cause the environment is startling. Massachusetts alone burns and buries 5.4 million tons of trash every year. State Rep. Lori Ehrlich’s bill is a great stepping stone toward true respect of the environment.

There is even more action that Massachusetts can take though. The Massachusetts DEP has recently considered lifting the 22-year moratorium on burning trash in Massachusetts, which would allow more incinerators to be built. Governor Patrick has opened a public comment period for Massachusetts residents to respond to this proposal. We have a chance in the state to make a difference and keep more incinerators from being built. Thank you so much for raising awareness in the North Shore about banning plastic bags and taking a step in the right direction.
