Letter: Beverly Rotary president says thanks

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

As we are all witnessing on “American Idol,” Beverly and the North Shore have produced talent worthy of a national stage in Angie Miller. I can attest that there is other great talent in this region, and 15 talented singers graced the stage of Danversport Yacht Club on March 1 and proved it!

First, our winner from last year, Fred VanNess, warmed up the crowd with his moving performance of “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables.” Then the 14 contestants performed a wide variety of songs from show tunes to country-western to rock ’n’ roll, entertaining all at our fifth annual Beverly Rotary Club’s North Shore Star. The judges were Bill Hanney of the North Shore Music Theatre and TV personalities Dana Hersey and Joyce Kulhawik. They must have had a very difficult time choosing Sheree Dunwell of Lynn as the winner. Her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me” was inspiring.

My thanks go to all the performers for sharing their outstanding talents with us. Thank you also to the North Shore Music Theatre for producing the show and selecting the singers. BevCam did a terrific job filming the event, Danversport Yacht Club provided a wonderful venue and great service, and our celebrity judges made this a special night. I also wish to thank all the Beverly Rotarians who supported the event, and their continued support of the club during my term. A special thank you goes to Michael Harrington, who was our event chairman. As he has done for many years, Michael made this a great fundraising event for our club. There are also many businesses and people in Beverly who donated goods or services to our silent and live raffle. These items helped us make our fundraising goals for the event.

This year, we raised nearly $30,000 for various charities that we support. Much of this year’s proceeds will go toward scholarships for outstanding Beverly seniors heading off to college. In addition, other money raised will go toward other vital services and programs in Beverly and beyond.

Your local Rotary Club is proud to be part of the thriving and generous community of Beverly. Without all the people, businesses and organizations that contribute to us, we would not be able to give back so much to Beverly. I’m proud to lead this year’s club in all its endeavors.
