To the editor:

I want to thank The Salem News for its coverage of developments around the proposed wind turbine on Winter Island, and for its poll on this, where I proudly voted yes — yes, Winter Island is the right place for a wind turbine. I am confident concerns can be dealt with, and that technologies have advanced to the point that quiet, safe functioning is attainable.

I am proud of Salem for working toward this exciting development, which has the potential to begin to set this town on the course for clean, safe energy. The power plant is from an earlier era, and its day is passing.

I am grateful to Mayor Kim Driscoll and the members of the committee who have devoted time and resources to exploring the feasibility of this new wind turbine. It is time for us to pull together as a community and support a positive, sustainable future for this great little town.

Our view: Museum, college go above and beyond

There are many intangible benefits to be had from the existence of nonprofit institutions like the Peabody Essex Museum and Endicott College in our midst.
Indeed, the recent growth of both — the former in downtown Salem and the latter along Beverly's Gold Coast — represent remarkable success stories that have added immeasurably to the quality of life in their respective communities, as well as on the North Shore.

Our view: O'Neill's 500th win well-deserved

For coach or athlete, getting that milestone victory is never easy. Just ask Tim Wakefield, the recently retired Red Sox pitcher who struggled through eight appearances before getting his 200th career win last Sept. 13.

My View: Salem school turnaround plan should have bilingual component

As a community, Salem is at a critical juncture in the "turnaround" of our schools.
We know that we must improve MCAS scores as, for better or worse, that is the mandated measure of accomplishment. We also know that issues surrounding language and literacy should be at the heart of our collective demand for excellence, as strong literacy skills lead to success by every measure.

Letter: Surprised at Tisei's opposition to CLASS Act

To the editor:
I read with surprise Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei's column and claim that the passage of the CLASS Act "is living proof of the problems that plague our capital." ("Tierney, Dems won't let discredited CLASS Act die," Opinion, Tuesday, Feb. 14.)

Our View: Headless dragon no laughing matter

We thought it was a particularly poor defense offered by the lawyer for the two Salem men caught with the head of an ice dragon that had decorated the Essex Street pedestrian mall two weekends ago.
Without acknowledging any culpability on his clients' part, veteran defense attorney John Andrews told a reporter, "I don't know how the government can prove what, if any, value exists for the sculpture." Having been carved from a block of ice, he noted, perhaps with tongue in cheek, "It's got to be one of the most depreciating assets you can have."
