Letter: Texting and driving: It can wait

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

We all know about how dangerous distracted driving can be, and it seems like every week we hear about a tragic and preventable accident caused by texting and driving. Texting while driving is illegal in Massachusetts and leads to more than 100,000 accidents each year in the United States. While passing more laws and enforcing the ones we have is certainly a start, we need to continue to build on the no texting while driving movement.

I am writing today to ask readers to participate in a Drive 4 Pledges Day on Sept. 19 for the It Can Wait initiative. It Can Wait is a public education effort about the dangers of texting and driving. Last year, I was proud to join state and local officials at a demonstration at Salem High School where we all took the pledge not to text while driving. I urge all readers to observe the national day of action on today and take the pledge, too, by visiting

Thank you for your consideration to participate in this important event, and I encourage you to share it with your family and friends.
