The Salem News
---- — To the editor:
Claire Keyes’ poem (and recollections) about Irish poet Seamus Heaney’s visit to Salem in 1984 in Friday’s paper (Book Notes, Sept. 20) prompted me to fish out the notes that I made that April evening.
I, too, was at the table at Maddie’s Sail Loft. It was Heaney who suggested that we not tarry, lest we keep the audience waiting. And when we arrived at the hall atop the library (now partly demolished), Heaney posted himself at the entry so that he could personally greet the crowd that had come to hear him.
