To the editor:
The deconstruction of the former Salem State University library on Lafayette Street has posed many challenges. The university fully acknowledges the disruption caused by this project and the inconveniences to our neighbors, students, employees and those who must travel through the area.
As safety for all is our top priority in every construction project, this deconstruction process is being carried out in accordance with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved work plan, which complies with all of the agency’s required environmental safety standards.
The university makes every effort to maintain communication with our neighbors throughout all major initiatives. This project provides us with the opportune time to remind all university neighbors and Salem residents of the processes we have established for communication with the external community.
External affairs has a website specific to neighborhood relations at salemstate.edu/community with a direct link to construction updates and presentations at salemstate.edu/construction. External affairs also provides email notifications related to construction, upcoming events and other updates that may be of interest to our neighbors and other Salem residents. Residents are welcome to contact our external affairs office with any questions or concerns involving the university at 978-542-7757 or email@example.com.
Another option for staying informed or expressing concern about university activities is through the Salem State University Neighborhood Advisory Committee. Mayor Kimberley Driscoll re-established the committee to better foster communication among the city, the university and its neighbors. Managed by the mayor’s office, the committee consists of representative ward councilors, as well as neighborhood and university representatives. The committee’s regular meeting time is the third Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. in Room 106 of the Enterprise Center on Central Campus. More information about this committee can be found on the city’s website.
