The school lunch program is part of a child’s educational need. It is a tool that helps children in the learning process by helping them to be attentive and healthy; with proper nutrition, a child grows smart and strong, leading to better behavior and a better ability to learn.
In 1962, Congress enacted the second Sunday in October to begin a week called the National School Lunch Week. This is a week recognizing those dedicated workers who care and make good nutrition a reality for the children.
This reality is reflected through the hardworking staff of the Salem school system that prepares thousands of meals each school year, providing our kids with a better chance to move forward in their education and in their lives. And it is this staff that we should celebrate every day, not just during the week in October dedicated to them.
