---- — To the editor:
I support Mike Cahill for mayor. Mike has a reputable record when it comes to city and state politics. A native of Beverly, his roots are deep — as is his heart. Mike loves Beverly: its schools, its parks, its businesses and, most importantly, its citizens. One of his earnest objectives is to maintain the character of our neighborhoods: to foster a sense of community and make our streets safe.
I could list Mike’s superlative qualities for pages. His personality and genuine compassion, though, are what impress me most.
A couple of weeks ago, I was mowing my parents’ lawn in Ryal Side. Mike was walking door-to-door, as all politicians do. When he came to my parents’ house, I introduced him to my mother and father. Not only did he know my dad’s name, but he also knew that he is a retired firefighter for the city, that he dedicated his life to providing an altruistic, civil service to our community.
When asked, Mike said he remembers this fact from studying old voter registers that used to indicate a person’s vocation along with his/her political affiliation. For someone who can hardly remember where he left his keys or wallet (c’est moi), I am impressed that my 82-year-old father is not just a name, a member of a particular party, or a vote. He is a person. Mike cares about my dad.
That is why I am voting for Mike Cahill for mayor of Beverly on Nov. 5. Our city needs someone who knows us and cares about us.
