Beverly’s mayor-elect is right: The City Council should hold off on voting on committee appointments until after the start of the new year, when a new slate of elected officials take office.
The issue came up last Monday, when current Mayor Bill Scanlon asked councilors to reappoint or appoint a dozen people to the Planning Board, the Parks and Recreation Committee, the Harbor Management Authority and the Board of Health.
Mayor-elect Mike Cahill, however, asked the council to hold off on the confirmations until after Jan. 6, when he can make the selections himself. The council’s Public Service and Legal Affairs committees are scheduled to take up the issue Monday night
We agree with Scanlon that it is important to keep the city’s volunteer boards stocked with smart, dedicated people. And the list of people he’s put forward includes talented residents.
But the choice should be left to Cahill and the new council, which will be working with the volunteers in the years to come. In turn, the new mayor and councilors should move quickly on the appointments.
