To the editor:
On Jan. 13, there was a front-page story in The Salem News headlined, "Church razing under review."
In smaller print were the words: "Federal agency wants more information on plans for St. Joseph."
I am pleased to know that the demolition of St. Joseph Cruciform Church is once again being rightfully and prudently detained for further investigation.
However, the only pertinent fact to know and to remember always is that this ecclesiastical cruciform church was designed in the newly formed, 20th-century style of architecture and because of this truth, it is one of the three churches in America that must be preserved for all future generations to come.
However, the present-day building plan of the Boston Archdiocese's Planning Office of Urban Affairs ignores this pertinent fact and it wants to demolish this church that its own Bishop Lloyd Wright once blessed.
Secondly, upon the walls of St. Joseph's holy church is the unwritten history of Salem's French population, for these people had this ecclesiastical building built for worship after their first church was destroyed in the flames of Salem's Great Fire in 1914.
Must we now lose our second church because of this subterfuge disguised as a building plan to continue Christian charitable work, when in reality it may be no more than a lucrative financial investment?
When spiritual leaders can manipulate the municipally powerful all in the name of God, then their plan will fall short of divine glory, especially when their building project is contingent upon demolishing a house of God that deserves preservation.
