Here's a toast to Mercury Brewing for investing in the town whose name appears on its best-loved product, Ipswich Ale.

The company has outgrown its present quarters. But rather than move out of state or even out of town, owner Rob Allen recently announced plans to install a new bottling plant in the former Soffron Brothers clam processing plant in downtown Ipswich that will also include a brew pub.

That's good news for employees and good news for the town, which will reap tax revenue from the rehabilitation and expansion of the abandoned shellfish processing facility in Brown Square. The enterprise should also beautify and bring new life to that section of downtown Ipswich.

The new plant will more than double the company's present brewing capacity. (Besides Ipswich Ale, Mercury Brewing produces Stone Cat beer, its own brand of root beer, and this year will produce four specialty brews including Choate Bridge Stout in honor of the town's 375th anniversary.)

Further evidence that the beer company is here to stay: It's changed its name from Mercury Brewing to Ipswich Ale Brewery.

Our View: Regional projects still must prove themselves

There were heartening developments on two projects of significant regional import last week.
One was the appointment of Thomas Dubas as director of the new regional 911 dispatch center in Middleton. The second was the report from a key member of the team planning a new regional vocational school that the facility should be built on time for the amount budgeted.

For the second time in the last five Super Bowls, the favored Patriots lost to Eli Manning and the Giants following a heartbreaking (for New Englanders) New York drive in the waning minutes of the game.

My View: Dickens bicentennial: 'Inimitable' British author still has worldwide fan base

"I am born."
So begins "David Copperfield," the eighth of 15 major novels from the pen of Charles Dickens, who was born near Portsmouth, England, exactly 200 years ago today. "Copperfield" was Dickens' favorite "child" (as he put it), and his alter ego in many ways, the main character being, like Dickens, a sensitive boy who triumphed over early adversity to become a successful writer. But even Dickens, at the height of his fame, could scarcely have imagined just how enduring his legacy would be.

East Coasters still have until Sunday to view a remarkable exhibit of Dickens letters and manuscripts (including the original of "A Christmas Carol") at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City. Closer to home in Lowell, where Dickens visited the mills in 1842, UMass Lowell is sponsoring a seven-month series of performances, speakers and community programs honoring Dickens, which will kick off in late March with the opening of the exhibit, "Dickens in Massachusetts: A Tale of Power and Transformation" (for details go to www.uml.edu/conferences/dickens-in-lowell).

Our view: STOCK Act a win for Brown

Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown backed up his claim of bipartisanship last week by helping push through a piece of legislation that President Obama had identified as one of his priorities.
The legislation, which passed the Senate on a 96-3 vote Thursday and is scheduled to be taken up by the House this week, prohibits members of Congress and their staffs from engaging in insider trading or otherwise using information gleaned through the performance of their duties, for financial gain.
