Letter: Lineup set for 2009 Salem Jazz and Soul Fest

To the editor:

The board members of the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival extend our sincerest appreciation to the many individuals, businesses and organizations that helped to make Big Band Blues, our gala spring fundraiser at the Peabody Essex Museum on Saturday, April 18, such a tremendous success.

This sold-out concert, the excellent bands, singers and musicians, the support of our sponsor — Tache Real Estate — and the donations, set a solid foundation for our goal of raising enough funds to guarantee a full series of concerts and activities for the third annual Salem Jazz and Soul Festival this spring and summer.

Our monthly Derby Square Berklee Summer Series will showcase these outstanding Berklee College student-run bands: May 9, Cole Degenova and the Peoples Republic; June 13, Carlos Averhoff Jr.; July 11, Roy Guzman; and Aug. 8, Dopapod.

These concerts are held on Saturday afternoons from 5 to 7 p.m.

Salem Jazz and Soul's main festival will once again be held at the Salem Willows on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15 and 16. Saturday's lineup will include: Manami Morita and Randy Runyon Quintet, Gregorio Uribe, Brotherhood of Groove, Seamonsters, and the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, with a special appearance by the Boston Typewriter Orchestra. Sunday's lineup will feature: Quill and the Further from Zen Orchestra, Soul Force V, Jordan Valentine and the Sunday Saints, and close with The Boston Horns Big Band.
