To the editor:
I am writing to recognize the incomparable level of performing arts instruction available in the Salem public schools, particularly in the drama program at Salem High School.
This program includes a comprehensive drama curriculum and countless performance opportunities. Industry professionals train students in all areas of performance and technical theater alongside an experienced faculty in the music and drama departments.
I enjoyed five years of teaching at Salem High School before completing my master's degree at New York University. This degree program allowed me to study educational theater and look at many programs implemented across the country. These programs included public schools, private schools and specialized performing arts schools.
I have come to realize that Salem High School is the only school in the area to offer high-quality instruction in all aspects of theater as a part of the school's coursework. Classes offer training in musical, technical, acting and design aspects of theater. The program prepares students looking to pursue a college career in any of these areas.
Local audiences need only have seen Salem High School's recent production of "Sweeney Todd" to see all of the drama program's efforts showcased at one event. Congratulations to Lianne Goodwin and the entire performing arts faculty at Salem High School for continuing to build a program that is a leader in its community.
