Letter: Historic Peabody building should be preserved

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

If the building at Lowell and Chestnut streets in Peabody was built in 1840, it has historic value. It was built in the early days of South Danvers (as Peabody was formerly called).

I have taken photos of it in the past. If the structure is physically unsound, it might be lost, but at its age, it is part of Peabody’s early cityscape and should be preserved.

If Peabody “renews” itself by taking the “easy way out” it will only remind people of the low point in Salem’s urban renewal process, when notable structures were unfortunately demolished with little regard.
