Letter: Pinto has experience

To the editor:

Steven Pinto has placed his name before the Salem City Council as a candidate to fill the remainder of Councilor-at-large Joan Lovely’s term. With 30 years of perspective on Salem government, I support Steve’s candidacy.

Salem continues to address critical issues of policy and finance. Steve’s lifelong residency and his experience as an at-large councilor is an important component of his candidacy. His knowledge of Salem and his two terms as an at-large councilor would ensure that he could fill this council seat without needing to be brought up to speed on city issues or the workings of the council. Institutional knowledge of the council is key to being an effective councilor and is important to Salem’s citizens to balance a city government with a strong mayor.

Without such a balance, we risk the council’s advice and consent powers being diminished, which is an important protection that is established in Salem’s governmental charter.
