Letter: Thank you from Danvers Committee for Diversity

To the editor:

The Danvers Committee for Diversity wishes to thank all who contributed to the success of our tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 21.

What a night!

The Follow Hymn Chorus and the Danvers High School Chamber Chorus lifted our voices in song, while Paul Marcus of Community Change gave us much to think about, some of it uncomfortable, however necessary. Artwork by first-grade Smith School students and original poetry by Kristina Hathaway, a freshman at Danvers High School, added youthful expression to our celebration. Both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts led our Pledge of Allegiance.

Drum Majors for Justice Karen Devaney, Tammy King, Dave Gotts, Sean McDaniel, the Rev. Susan Morrison, Kary and Patricia Andrinopoulos, Ted and Gloria Kougianis, Sean McDaniel, and Gary Gill have contributed to a climate of acceptance, equality and diversity in our community, and it was a pleasure to honor them.

The support of the event by the friends and families of our honorees was tremendous, and will add significantly to the Danvers Diversity Scholarship Fund. We are thankful to all who joined us, and to our wonderfully generous host, the Danversport Yacht Club. In addition donations from the Danversport Yacht Club, Danvers Democratic Committee, Donald and Maryann Kowalski, East Boston Savings Bank, Eastern Bank, John M. Ross & Sons Inc., Kiwanis, Lyons Ambulance Service, Linda and Dan Magalnick, Paul and Connie Pawlak, SMC Cleaning Services, and Joseph Waldbaum allowed us to provide dinner for the Danvers High School Chamber Singers and the Follow Hymn Chorus.

Special thanks as always to those who take a table each year and have become an integral part of the evening: Holy Trinity United Methodist Church, Maple Street Congregational Church, Danvers Kiwanis, Danvers Rotary, AARP and St. John’s Prep.

Our thanks, as well, to the Danvers Herald and The Salem News for publicizing the event and to Myrna Fearer for her invaluable assistance in preparing the honorees’ biographies.
