Letter: Beverly took to The Block this summer

To the editor:

Downtown Beverly has a new signature event! Thousands of people celebrated downtown on Aug. 3 during The Block, our second street party, which also served as a kickoff to Homecoming. We had another amazing turnout as people from Beverly and beyond joined their friends to enjoy dinner, live music and the beer and wine garden. We’ve gotten rave reviews and already people are looking forward to more of The Block next summer!

The Block’s major sponsors included Eastern Bank, Netcast Church, North Shore Bank and the City of Beverly. Other sponsors included Beverly Hospital; Callahan, Dewan and Murphy; Margaret Belmonte and Shannon Barror of Margaret Belmonte and Associates at RE/MAX; Sterling Insurance Agency; People’s United Bank; Temkin Financial Group; Waring School; Henry’s Wine Cellar; IN THE CAR and Salerno’s Italian Eatery. In-kind sponsors included Archer Insurance, CCI Reprographics, Danger!Awesome, Maria’s Pizza, the River House Clean Team and Todd’s Sporting Goods. We would like to extend a special thank you to the City’s Department of Public Services and the Beverly Police Department for supplying all the fencing, staging and safety coverage.

Thanks to our dedicated committee members who planned The Block: Brenda Wong Murphy, Dan Brosnan, Day Ann Kelley, Denise Deschamps, Mindelynn Young, Rhonda Wallace, Sandra Griffel and Sarah Boucher, as well as more than 30 event volunteers who pitched in to help with everything from setting out hula hoops to selling raffle tickets. We’re pleased to announce that we’re donating half of the proceeds from the raffle sales to the Homecoming fireworks show!

Thanks to our street food vendors Atomic Cafe, Barrel House American Bar, Fibber McGee’s, Happy Clam Seafood Cafe, Marino’s Cafe, Rowand’s Seafood, Soma, Trattoria Bella Mia and Winfrey’s Fudge & Chocolates. Pop up bar DRINK was hosted by Henry’s Wine Cellar and Salerno’s Italian Eatery. Live music was enjoyed by everyone throughout the evening. Thank you to Barrence Whitfield, Froggy and the Friendship and Sound Association for their memorable performances. Special thanks to Dave Selvo and Erin Burke-Moran for providing the sound equipment.

If you are interested in volunteering or becoming a sponsor for one of our events, please call us at 978-922-8558. We look forward to seeing you in 2014!
