To the editor:
Through the driving rain and scorching sun, volunteers came out to build the new playground at Forest River Park recently.
It was well worth the herculean effort. Today, it is teaming with children thrilled by the matrix climbing web, the fast slide and the views of the sea from the main tower.
The community playground would not have been possible without the support of the City of Salem and the dedicated members of this community. Steve Dibble provided his expertise and led an army of volunteers for six days. His hard work and skill are greatly appreciated.
In addition, Ed Pelletier, John Wright, Tom O'Shea and Doug Bollen of the Salem Park and Recreation Department were crucial to the success of the build.
It was wonderful to see the community come together on this project. Local businesses such as White Dove Market, Dunkin' Donuts, Engine House Pizza, Domino's Pizza, Christina's, Salem State College and Front Street Coffeehouse donated food and supplies to the hungry and tired workers. City officials such as Mayor Kim Driscoll and City Councilors Matt Veno, Bob McCarthy and Steve Pinto dug postholes, moved concrete and spread wood chips.
Moreover, parents and grandparents, the Salem Boosters, the Boy Scouts, and people who simply read about the playground in this paper pitched in to build the new playground. All of their efforts are a testament to the strength of the Salem community and another reason why Salem is a wonderful place to call home.
To celebrate the opening of the new playground and benefit the Friends of Forest River Park, we will hold a Puleo's ice cream social this Saturday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the park.
