Letter: On the 'wing-nut' faction of the GOP

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

This is in response to Barbara Anderson’s column of Oct. 16 (”The shutdown — comedy or tragedy?”).

Everybody agrees that the federal debt and the deficit are serious problems. The key question is what to do about it, when and how. Just because the wing-nut faction of the GOP believes that the issue has to be handled now is no reason to act irresponsibly. One thing that sets the U.S. apart is the stability of our political system, and undermining this stability hurts our country.

Even if one believes that we are heading down the wrong road, threatening to grab the wheel and drive off a bridge is not a reasonable solution.

Defaulting on our debt payments would substantially increase our borrowing cost, which would worsen our deficit and seriously weaken the global economy, as well as America’s leadership position. Just the credible possibility of default hurt our bond rating. And doing anything that will impede our economic recovery — like the partial government shutdown — will also increase our deficit problem.

Finally, Barbara might want to re-read the end of “Don Quixote” before comparing herself to the title character.
