To the editor:
I have lived in Beverly my entire life, the last 30 years on Dodges Row in North Beverly. Every day, I drive down Laurel Street and Walnut Street to avoid the horrible traffic conditions at the railroad tracks.
If I don’t get started by 7:30 a.m., I use narrow Grover Street to go to Route 128 or to travel to any other place in Beverly. I can’t even imagine the increase in traffic on these small streets when the proposed strip mall project on Brimbal Avenue is complete. The public has been deceived for more than 10 years with scare tactics about the dangerous Exit 19 at Brimbal Avenue, and that we need an interchange because people aren’t able to make a left-hand turn. What was wrong with installing one smart traffic light where the Route 128 egress ramp connects to Brimbal Avenue? It would handle all of the traffic except for the music theater, and they use private police details. All along, it has been about opening up land for commercial development that right now has no access.
For the past 15 years, taxpayers have been ignored, while developers, bankers and lawyers have done very well. People ask me why I have a Cahill for Mayor sign on my lawn because he is for the Brimbal Avenue project. I actually voted for Rick Marciano in the primary but will support Mike Cahill because Mayor Scanlon supports Wes Slate. I only hope if Mike Cahill wins, he cuts ties with Mayor Scanlon, his city planner, finance director and the city solicitor.
Then we can go back to what Beverly used to be — wouldn’t it be great to see a 5-4 or 6-3 vote on the City Council after all these years?
I didn’t even mention Route 1A in North Beverly, which is a disaster beyond words.
