Letter: Too early for endorsement

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

When Elizabeth Warren endorsed John Tierney last week (“Warren visits Salem to endorse Tierney,” June 16), she did a disservice to all the Democrats in this district. Democrats across the 6th District, and across the country, worked very, very hard to keep John Tierney in office in 2012. I know, because I was among them. But it shouldn’t be such a struggle to keep a Democrat in this seat. With all due respect to Congressman Tierney, whom I supported and worked for in the past, he is not entitled to the seat by virtue of his incumbency.

The fact is, we are wasting money and resources protecting a weak Democrat here instead of working to pick up seats in other states and win a majority in the House. For the first time in 18 years, we have a strong Democratic alternative to John Tierney. I believe that Seth Moulton is not only an excellent candidate, but he’s more likely to defeat Richard Tisei in November.

Democracy is not about incumbent protection. It’s about choosing the best candidate for the job, each and every election.

Elizabeth Warren should have waited until the strongest Democrat emerged from the primary before making an endorsement.
