Letter: A wonderful Independence Day holiday in Salem

To the editor:

I would like to commend city of Salem officials for their fine work in presenting this year’s Independence Day celebration. So what if it was a couple of days late due to the weather? It was superb, a great time for all who attended. The fireworks were beautiful, as always, and the whole group of festivities ran so smoothly. But what really sets Salem’s celebration apart from all others is the music, presented by the fabulous Hillyer Festival Orchestra. The sound system was top-notch, and this orchestra played for hours without missing a beat, giving us a variety of music from opera to all the traditional marches and even a couple of Santana tunes that would have made Carlos Santana stop and listen. This group of musicians have it together, led by the very talented Mr. Hillyer, and we are all better for having spent the day with them.

I now live in Beverly, but grew up in Salem in the Derby Street area, and always think of Salem as my second home.
