Our View: Peabody, Prep stage winning performances

North Shore high schools continue to shine in state competition. The latest honors went to the theater troupes from Peabody Veterans Memorial High School and St. John's Prep, which took the top two spots at the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild's 81st annual DramaFest last weekend.

Both schools have impressive theater traditions, but this was the first outright win in state competition by Peabody since 1983.

Peabody's performance of the complex "Alchemy of Desire/Dead-Man's Blues," featuring seniors Elainy Mato, Shauna Cunningham and Erica Risti; sophomores Bernie Baldassaro and Leandra Romano; and freshman Becky Jo Roland, certainly impressed the judges. And so did the Prep contingent's modern interpretation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth."

Romano said the accolades were a real confidence-booster for the theater program at Peabody High.

"All this work we did in the last four months really paid off," she told reporter Ethan Forman. Hard to argue with that.
