The Salem News
---- — To the editor:
I feel I must respond to the July 8 column in The Salem News about same-sex marriage (”Same-sex marriage and the idea of rights”). The writer mentions traditions. Yes, marriage ceremonies such as the traditional man-and-woman one are lovely, and of course opposite-sex marriage is important, but nontraditional couples should be able to enjoy the same rites and ceremonies as traditional couples. And children of same-sex couples need the security of their parents’ marriage being legitimate. There is a tradition not mentioned in the piece: that of discrimination. Same-sex couples have been traditionally discriminated against. They deserve all the rights and privileges afforded to opposite-sex couples.
