Our view: Reason to celebrate in Beverly

If you weren’t in downtown Beverly Saturday afternoon, you missed out on a good time.

Most of Cabot Street was closed off for the city’s first “block party,” a casual, friendly affair that drew visitors from across the region to hear live music, enjoy a beer or a glass of wine and fill up on some tasty street food. The brainchild of the Beverly Main Streets organization, the event was a great way to draw interest in the city’s continually improving downtown. (If you missed the party, don’t worry — there’s another one scheduled for Aug. 3.)

Even before the block party kicked off, residents were treated to a Shakespeare in the Park performance at Beverly Historical Society’s Hale Farm property. The Historical Society and the Striving Artists Theatre Company came together to stage an engaging version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on the farm’s expansive back lawn.

It’s good to see Beverly Main Streets coming up with new ways to bring people downtown, and it’s encouraging to see smaller nonprofits like the Striving Artists and the Historical Society banding together to remain relevant. In both cases, the city and the region are better for it.
