Letter: Rain couldn't dampen spirits at soccer tourney

To the editor:

We are writing to thank everyone in Danvers who helped make Danvers Youth Soccer’s 22nd annual Danvers Invitational Tournament a huge success. While we typically enjoy beautiful weather every Memorial Day weekend when the tournament is held at multiple fields throughout the town, this year we weren’t so lucky. The rainy, cold weather we experienced the first two days of the event, however, did not deter the players, coaches, volunteers, and spectators from playing hard or cheering on their favorite teams.

Thanks to many generous sponsors who helped make this tournament so successful, including: Sports Authority, Atlantis Sports Club & Spa, Joan and Lou Black, Blanch & Son Trophies and Awards, Cranney Companies, Danvers Ford, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Mastrorilli’s Catering, and Pete’s a Place.

With nearly 2,000 players and their families descending on Danvers over Memorial Day weekend, the Danvers Invitational Tournament is the biggest fundraiser for Danvers Youth Soccer. The money raised helps to keep the cost of the program low for Danvers families. It also helps us to reduce or eliminate registration fees for families who aren’t able to afford them, provide scholarships to graduating seniors who were active in Danvers Youth Soccer every year of high school, as well as hire a professional director of coaching, and many other important program elements.

We would also like to thank:

The volunteers who served as field marshals, parking attendants, sales people, and filled countless other roles to ensure a safe and successful event;

The kids of Danvers who practice and play to improve their skills as they become excellent soccer players;

The teams from the 27 other cities and towns that play in the tournament, including multiple teams from as far away as Portsmouth, RI, and Londonderry, NH;

The board of Danvers Youth Soccer and the Danvers Invitational Tournament committee for their tireless efforts on behalf of the youth of Danvers;
