The Salem News
---- — To the editor:
In all the 50 or more years that I have reported on or been involved in politics, former state Rep. John Dolan of Ipswich, who died two weeks ago, stands out among civil servants as one of the best.
He was a Republican, and I was a Democrat, so we had our differences, but John belonged to the old school of Republicans: He wasn’t driven by extremes but was a centrist who voted the issues, not the labels. He cared about conservation and land use and waterways long before they were popular concerns. He carried issues of his towns to both the General Court and to the different state administrations in office during his 18-year tenure in the General Court. He worked hard and stayed in touch with his district, which at one time ran all the way from Gloucester to Amesbury.
John was a blue-collar Republican, down-to earth, unpretentious, approachable and sensitive to ordinary people’s problems.
And I always figured he was as honest as the day was long.
