Letter: Gourmet Gala a winning fundraiser

To the editor:

The fifth annual Gourmet Gala: Wining and Dining for a Cause (formerly Taste of the North Shore) was held Friday, March 28, at Acura of Peabody. The event, a fundraiser for the North Shore Cancer Walk/Run, raised more than $65,000.

All proceeds help fund construction of a new inpatient oncology unit at NSMC Salem Hospital and supplement wellness programs and services at Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center.

Thanks to the generosity of the local restaurants that participated: 5 Corners Kitchen, 9 Elm American Bistro, 62 Restaurant & Wine Bar, The Blue Ox, Cakes for Occasions, Colonial Hall at Rockafellas, Creative Catering, Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, Finz Seafood & Grill, Henry’s Market, Legal C Bar, Opus, Pellana Prime Steakhouse, Salem Waterfront Hotel and Marina, Tavern in the Square, The Topsfield Bakeshop, Treadwell’s World Famous Ice Cream, Turner’s Seafood, and The Whoo(pie) Wagon. We are also grateful to the businesses that donated items for our auctions.

Thanks to Billy Costa of Kiss 108 and NESN’s “Dining Playbook,” who once again served as auctioneer for the event and donated prizes providing winners with a chance to appear on “Dining Playbook.” Thanks to the 2014 Cancer Walk/Run Steering Committee, including co-chairs Dr. Karen Krag, an oncologist at Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center, and Jerry Tucker of Wellington Management; Joel Avery of Acura of Peabody; Elisabeth Avila and Lisa Carbone of Eastern Bank; Debbie Cole of Great Brewers; JoAnn Gillette of North Shore 104.9; Daniella Larosa of Pellana; Kevin Noyes of Peoples United Bank; Jason Sevinor of Designer Bath; Ed Soul of Beverly Athletic Club; Leigh Stack of Re/Max Advantage and Jude Toner of Sagan Realtors.

Special thanks to Joel Schwartz, M.D., director of oncology services, and Jim McIntyre, M.D., chief of radiation oncology, both of Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center, for their tireless dedication to their patients and our outreach and fundraising efforts. The North Shore Cancer Walk/Run will be held June 22 at Salem Willows Park. To register or donate, please visit www.northshorecancerwalk.org.
