Letter: Dalton will be missed

To the editor:

I read yesterday Tom Dalton’s piece where he announced his retirement. I had to read it twice to believe it. I just wish it weren’t true.

Tom interviewed me twice for Salem News articles. In August 2000, I led him on a tour of Howard Street Cemetery. It was raining that day. I’ll never forget it. I was so impressed with his skills as a reporter — his quick wit, perceptiveness and accuracy. You can’t beat that. (I didn’t even mind that it was raining.)

I have three articles written by Tom as keepsakes. I guess I don’t like change. Tom will leave big shoes to be filled. And I’d just like to say, “Thank you, Tom,” for all the great articles you’ve written, for your contributions to The Salem News. Have a good retirement — you certainly deserve it.
