Letter: Judge is wrong on transfer station

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

Judge Howard Whitehead in his infinite wisdom has ruled against the city of Salem in its quest to clean up the toxic Swampscott Road waste site, which the owners of Northside Carting had agreed to do along with building a state-of-the-art transfer station and beautifying the site.

The judge’s decision is misguided and just plain wrong on the merits, but be that as it may, he’s the judge.

So on the basis of his decision to side with the neighbors on Swampscott Road opposed to Northside’s cleanup plans, those neighbors should not expect the rest of us to pick up the tab to clean the site as mandated by the EPA and be willing to accept a special property assessment to cover the $1 million estimated cleanup cost.

That’s only fair!
