Letter: Cancer Walk a success

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

On Sunday, June 23, the 23rd annual North Shore Cancer Walk was held in Salem. We were extremely moved by this annual celebration of life, hope and courage. We are extremely grateful to the nearly 5,000 walkers and more than 250 volunteers who make the event so successful each year.

Thank you to Phyllis Sagan and Jude Toner, this year’s North Shore Cancer Walk co-chairs, both of Sagan Realtors. We are still tallying fundraising numbers and thank everyone who raised funds or donated to the walk this year. Our top individual fundraisers as of June 23 were: Randall Brown of Gloucester; Debbie Cole of Salem; Jerry Tucker of Marblehead; Luis Montes-Acosta of Worcester and Cathy Wallace of Danvers. Our top team fundraisers were: Debbie’s Snack Cakes, Team General Electric Aviation, Team Kathie Mitchell, Team Tucker and Team Roberta’s Rebels. Together, these teams raised more than $100,000 for the walk.

Proceeds from the walk will support the renovation of the inpatient oncology unit at NSMC Salem Hospital, as well as wellness services and support programs for the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers. These resources and the exceptional cancer treatment programs that are available in our community would not be possible without the support of our walk donors and supporters.

We would also like to thank all of the sponsors of this year’s North Shore Cancer Walk, including this year’s presenting sponsor, Danversbank Charitable Foundation. Special thanks also to Sue Tabb, co-host of Exceptional Women on Magic 106.7 FM, for serving as emcee to kick off our walk program on the day of the event.

The walk is the largest single-day fundraising event on the North Shore and requires an exceptional organizational commitment. We are deeply indebted and grateful to the great City of Salem fire, parks, parking and police departments; Crosby’s Markets; our many refreshment donors; Salem Trolley; and the hundreds of volunteers who assisted with the logistics and entertainment.

Finally, we would like to sincerely thank those participants and supporters of the walk who are battling or who have battled cancer and those who have lost loved ones and participate in their honor. Your participation inspires us to do what we do, and we thank you for your courage, resolve and inspiration.

The 2013 North Shore Cancer Run will take place on Nov. 10, 2013, at Cove Community Center in Beverly, and we look forward to another great community event in the fight against cancer.
