Thanks: SSU provides boost for AARP tax preparation program

To the editor:

The AARP Tax-Aide program of Eastern Massachusetts would like to thank the president and staff of Salem State University for the use of the classrooms at the Bertolon Business School for the training of local Tax-Aide volunteers.

The program is sponsored by AARP and is the largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance service in the country.

It is offered to low- and moderate-income taxpayers with special attention going to those ages 60 or older. Last year, 35,000 volunteers prepared 2.6 million tax returns.

There are 35 Tax-Aide locations on the North Shore staffed by 71 councilors, most trained at SSU during January.

Last year almost 3,000 people had tax returns prepared and filed by these individuals.

The local site, at the Salem Council on Aging, staffed by six AARP Tax-Aide volunteers and supported by director Doug Bollen and his staff, filed more than 400 tax returns free of charge.

The continuing success of the program is due to the volunteers, local coordinators and institutions like Salem State University that enable this valuable resource to be provided to the community.
