Letter: Romney spoke the truth

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

Recently, the media have seized on released recordings of Mitt Romney’s comments made at a fundraiser that, some would say, paint him as uncaring and out of touch with the less fortunate in our country. As a Romney supporter and someone who recognizes the man’s words are often ill-timed, I would say that, this time, he need not back away from his position. He should not be shamed into apologizing or even explaining himself, for that matter. I believe he should embrace his comments, as they represent well-known facts and simply echo what millions of us are feeling, but never get to express in public.

What Mitt said is nothing to be ashamed of. The shame is, in fact, that it is the truth and no one seems to want to talk about it; that President Obama, Gov. Patrick and countless Democrats before them have created this whole class of people whose entire lives and lifestyles we, as hardworking taxpayers of both parties, have been forced to subsidize.

Why should we be painted as uncaring and intimidated into silence? We already work hard to put food on the table, clothes on our back and to educate our children. Why must we struggle further for those whose path to the American dream is paved in our sweat and whose free lunch is paid for with our hard-earned money?

We can no longer ignore the swelling ranks of those claiming title to some form of government handout. It is no longer a drop in the bucket, and it’s certainly not limited to the sick and those who are truly in need. How can a country sustain millions of people feeding at the public trough for so long — 43 million people on food stamps alone. How can we not speak up? Are we sheep? Have we been so brainwashed that we no longer care? Wake up, America. People are being bribed, with our money, for their votes. From free housing, free food, free cellphones, free transportation, we pay for it all. And they don’t want us to complain? We’re maxed out. Enough already!

Every time I see a Democrat on TV telling us how he or she is trying to help the middle class, only one word comes to mind: “liar.” Yes, it takes a special kind of liar to stand there and tell you they care for you and know your pain, while at the same time fleecing you and giving your hard-earned money to those unwilling to work for their own.

Obama is no savior. He’s not the next messiah. He’s not working on saving this country from misery. In fact, it will take decades to undo the damage he’s already done. Please, let’s not give him a chance to make it worse.
