Letter: Urging a yes vote on CPA in Salem

To the editor:

As co-treasurers of Salem’s city-wide coalition that advocated for the Community Preservation Act in 2007, we are pleased that Salem voters will have another chance to adopt the CPA for our city.

Five years ago, 124 Bay State municipalities had adopted the CPA. Today that number has grown to 148. While these numbers speak for themselves, it is also telling that no community has repealed the act.

In 2007 the CPA was still a mystery, and Salem voters failed by only a few hundred votes to approve the CPA. Hopefully, 11 years of experience and volumes of data that confirm the overwhelming popularity of the CPA throughout the state will be the turning point this year.

We appreciate The Salem News’ recent editorial support for the CPA (Monday, Oct. 29), and we urge residents to consider the evidence and vote Yes for the CPA on Nov. 6. Peabody, Gloucester and the other 146 communities can’t be wrong.
