Letter: Dedication in the fight against Alzheimer's

To the editor:

On behalf of my team and myself, I would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank individuals, families and businesses alike for their generous donations made in the fight to end Alzheimer’s. Dedicated staff, caregivers and residents banded together to form a team, “Emeritus @ Cherry Hill-Walk and Rollers,” to walk in the Northeastern Massachusetts Walk to End Alzheimer’s, held Sept. 29 in North Andover. I’m proud to report that our team raised $5,945.

When you conduct your business on the North Shore, please keep in mind these businesses that shared unselfishly and supported our walk. Many thanks are extended to the Choate Bridge Pub and their waitresses, Zumi’s Espresso, Sullivan Insurance, Kelly Automotive Group, Tedford & Martin, Crystal Joyce Dance Academy, Vietri Construction, and Sophia’s of Salem. Raffles, fundraisers, and special sales and incentive days additionally raised funds toward this cause. Our popular lobster raffle, conducted by Vinny Burridge, F/V Lone Shark, Ipswich, was extremely successful, raising $380. A handmade quilt was donated by Florida resident Janet Jeffers Narcum and raffled off, netting $180. Staff at Emeritus were encouraged and eager to participate in lollipop sales, as well as paying a small fee to wear jeans on any given Friday.

Those of us who have lived with, worked for, loved or know of someone afflicted with dementia knows this is not a fight that can be won alone. There is no guarantee of status, race or gender as to who becomes afflicted with dementia. Strength in numbers and contagious community enthusiasm will assist us in raising funds to conduct research and hopefully someday find a cure.

Thank you for your support in our passionate endeavor.
