Tom who?

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw the game away. He gave nine points to the Giants in the first series of downs — safety, two points; then on a short field for the Giants' offense, another seven.

It cost them the game.

Brady is the goat.

Only one score in the second half. (And why did Belichick defer taking the opening kickoff? Not so against Baltimore.)

Brady stunk! He was not a Vince Lombardi-style quarterback in Super Bowl XLVI. The team did its job, Brady did not.

Eli Manning, the opposing quarterback, did his job and so did the rest of the New York Giants.

The won it and deserved the win.

Our View: Time to move forward with Law of the Sea treaty

Senate Republicans, including the Bay State's Scott Brown, can demonstrate their independence from the party's loony-right fringe by joining Democrats in supporting the Law of the Sea Treaty.
In fact, while the U.S. has long been observing the main tenets of the pact, which has been in force since 1994, it has little say in how it is administered, having failed to join the nearly 200 countries that have endorsed it.

And while the season does not officially get underway until late next month, many view this weekend — the one when we celebrate Memorial Day, which many have off on Monday — as the informal start of New Englanders' favorite time of year.

Nelson Benton: Looking in on our city councils

Beverly Mayor Bill Scanlon suffered a rare defeat this week at the hands of the City Council, which rejected his plea for an increase in the trash fee.
But despite their differences of opinion — Scanlon wanted to use the extra money to finance much-needed street and sidewalk repairs, while the council was loath to raise the current $100-per-househould annual fee given that Scanlon had negotiated a new trash contract for next year with no increase in cost to the city — debate was kept at a high level.

Letter: Students are authors of their own success

To the editor:
I just read with great interest, Dr. Brendan Walsh's argument against Saltonstall's increased hours and increased days ("Benefits of longer school day, year should be available to all Salem children," Opinion, Saturday, May 19). His reasoning seems misguided and self-serving.

Endicott, Gordon and Salem State all held their graduations this past weekend, and almost 2,400 students received undergraduate and graduate degrees from these three schools. But what was a joyous occasion may soon become an undue hardship for many of these graduates.
