Letter: Protect pets from wildlife

To the editor:

I love animals — including my own dogs and cats, as well as the wild coyotes whose territory we have invaded. Therefore, I read with interest Jim Sullivan’s (that was my father’s name, but no relation!) piece on Aug. 26 about coyote attacks on animals.

I feel terrible for the cat, Maxine, who was attacked. However, there is a simple solution: Keep your pets inside or on leash!

We are our pets’ guardians; they are not wild animals and are not equipped to deal with wildlife. Coyotes, deer, fisher cats — they all live in our woods and lands, and we have invaded their space. We owe it to our pets to keep them safe. I would not dream of leaving my Westie or one of my cats outside. Keep your pets safe — it’s within your control, and it’s your obligation!

Cynthia M. Sullivan
