Letter: Memories of ‘Sully’

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

John L. “Jackie” Sullivan — “Sully” as we used to call him (Salem News obituary, Aug. 20) played basketball with many of us at the old Peabody YMCA when it was on the top floor of the O’Shea building on the corner of Main and Foster streets in the 1960s. Sully also played in the Peabody summer and winter basketball leagues those years in the mid-1960s.

Sully was a good ball handler.

When he had that bad car accident in the mid-1960s, he was in a wheelchair for many years, and I used to see him at Raymond’s Drug Store in Peabody Square in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his father. That’s about the last time I’d seen Sully.

Sully was a strong-willed person to go through what he went through all those years.

Rest in peace, John L. “Jackie” Sullivan.
