Letter: U.S. must act in Syria

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

American philosopher George Santayana (1863-1952) said: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (from “Life of Reason I”). America finds itself in the same position Europe faced after World War I. Because of the brutality and destruction of “The Great War,” Europe chose to allow Hitler to seize Czechoslovakia and enslave a nation leading to World War II. If we do not stop Assad, then what will prevent North Korea or Iran from expanding their nuclear weapons, which would be a major threat to the United States and the world?

Yes, we are tired of war. But this action does not involve “boots on the ground” and American lives. And unlike Iran and Afghanistan, we have physical proof of the chemical weapons being used. We are not searching for weapons we “think” Assad might have.

We must send a message that the United States will act, even if it is alone, to protect all of humanity. England should remember Neville Chamberlain.
