Column: A unique opportunity for Salem students, parents

We are pleased to offer a unique opportunity to all Salem parents and students. Tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., under a large tent behind the Community Health Center at 47 Congress St., representatives from the Salem Public Schools and many community-based organizations will provide information and answer questions about summer programs available to students of all ages. Early registrations for summer programs will be accepted. You can also enjoy a tour of the Community Health Center, including free blood pressure tests and information on health insurance/enrollment.

The following summer programs will participate in the expo:

The 21st Century Program. A summer component of 21st Century grant. Students will learn by doing as they engage in a service-learning project that provides academic learning in context of a real community project. Students will also complete their summer reading on their brand-new Kindles.

Read Science Camp. Two-week science camp for middle school girls focusing on themes of ecology and the environment. The two weeks include field trips, hands-on inquiry-based activities and technology-based activities.

Collaborative Partnerships. Students will learn how exercise and diet affect the body. Students will be outside as much as possible and working on community projects.

English Language Learning. A theme-based program designed to enhance students’ English language development. There is a program for kindergarten through grade five, as well as one for middle school.

ELL Academy, Salem at Sea. This program designed to enhance English literacy for ELL students will focus on the theme of work. Students will learn about jobs and will enjoy career and college workshops.

For Kids Only. This program promotes summer learning through hands-on exploration and discovery in literacy, arts, recreation, technology and much more! Located at Bates School, the program is for ages 5 to 13 and runs Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., from July 1 through Aug. 16.
