To the editor:
Normally I would share The Salem News’ editorial point of view that our senators and congresspersons need to stand up and be counted one way or the other. But I find the questions surrounding action on Syria sufficiently profound and perplexing that I share Ed Markey’s need to look further before he committed last week.
I hope, now that time has elapsed, that he will find reason to take the Obama position. In a report in this week’s New Yorker magazine, Steve Coll puts it well: “There are red lines even in a war as devoid of clarity as Syria’s. The best available evidence is that on Aug. 21 Bashar al-Assad’s forces crossed to the other side.”
