Thanks: Legislators have government revamp at the finish line

To the editor:

We are pleased to report that "An Act Establishing a Town Manager in the Town of Hamilton" has passed another milestone.

As you may recall, the May Hamilton Town Meeting voted unanimously to petition the Legislature to enact the draft act. Subsequently, on Aug. 11 the draft act, designated S. 2084, received a hearing before the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government.

Sen. Bruce Tarr ably supported its passage with very effective testimony.

In her testimony, Government Study Committee (GSC) member Barbara Lawrence summarized the study and the need for a change to a strong manager form of government.

Our thanks to Sen. Tarr and state Rep. Brad Hill for all their help.

We look forward to steady progress through the next required steps to final passage.

In the meantime, the GSC continues to work with the Board of Selectmen and other town officials to ensure that the transition from town administrator to town manager is as smooth as such a fundamental change can be.
