Letter: Knitting for a cause

To the editor:

On Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Peabody Institute Library in Danvers, the Nightingale Knitters of Danvers, Elliot’s Girls of Florida, knitters from surrounding towns on the North and South shores, MetroWest, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, North and South Carolina joined forces by donating hand-knitted and crocheted items, crafts, baked goods and raffles, raising more than $6,500 to make the eighth annual “La Petite Boutique” for Elliot’s Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute another huge success!

This yearly event/fundraiser is driven by countless individuals, some who know Elliot Carlin Handin and many who don’t. Those who know him are aware of the daily struggles he endures as a result of the harsh treatment he underwent as a 3-month-old diagnosed with infant leukemia. Those who know him know that he had a bone marrow transplant to save his life at 1 year of age, and that his parents established Elliot’s Fund at Dana Farber years ago to honor Elliot and provide funds for research into this little-known, underfunded disease.

The Danvers community and beyond have been touched by the spirit of Elliot and have generously supported our fundraising efforts these past eight years. Never could an event like this be possible without each and every one who participates in small and large ways to make it all happen. Generous donations and limitless help from friends, strangers who seem to appear out of nowhere to offer help and donate handcrafted wonders! La Petite Boutique 2013 was a monumental success because of each and every one of you! I thank you, the Nightingales thank you, Elliot and his family thank you.

Hope to see you next year, the second Saturday in November. The Nightingales and friends will be there, and so will Elliot.

With ongoing gratitude,

Katy Carlin (Elliot’s Nana)
