Letter: Downtown residents, businesses need to learn to get along

To the editor:

Shirley Walker saw a sign in front of Murphy's advertising half-price appetizers for Derby Lofts residents ("Bar's appreciation was not appreciated by all," Salem page, Monday, Sept. 21).

Instead of going to Murphy's and talking to the owner about the intent of the sign, she apparently called the police and the mayor's office to complain that it was harassment. That's just wrong.

If she's trying to get a reputation as a troublemaker, she's certainly on the right track. Her actions to date do not seem to show anything except that she seems disinclined to try to work with others on a peaceable solution.

It's an uncomfortable situation for both Murphy's and Lofts residents, but if any positive forward movement is to come, both sides will have to make accommodations. Both sides will have to compromise. Both sides will have to work toward a solution that they can live with. Being antagonistic will not help.

I do not live in the Derby Lofts (nor in the downtown area at all) and I do not go to Murphy's unless I want to see a band upstairs. But as a Salem resident, I do have a vested interest in the economic and civic well-being of my city. It disturbs me to see how things keep playing out in an increasingly unproductive way. I believe a solution can be worked out, but only if both parties are willing to try.
